We are responsible
for the nature of South Tyrol

As well as managing hydroelectric power stations, we also implement environmental measures. For the first time and the only time in Italy, the 2011 concessions for large hydroelectric power plants were tied to significant environmental investments and to setting aside the necessary financial resources for same.

For the duration of the thirty-year period of the concession, Alperia will set aside a total of 400 million euro for environmental projects that will benefit the river communities hosting the power stations. This will lead to the implementation numerous interventions for environmental conservation and to reclaim the landscape previously identified by the councils of the single hydroelectric power stations.

Hydroelectric power station council

For each station, there is a council to establish the interventions to be implemented in detail. The council includes representatives from the Autonomous Province of Bolzano as well as from the individual municipalities affected and the holder of the concession.

These are just some of the over 500 measures completed or ongoing in South Tyrol, thanks to funds set aside for the environment:

37

new walking trails and recreational structures

21

energy-saving lighting systems

20

energy refurbishments in public buildings

13

buried power lines

Resources destined to environmental provisions are evenly distributed throughout the concession and their use is defined according to three-year plans. One part of the investments is destined to individual municipalities. To date 41 river municipalities have been able to make use of environmental financing, completing various projects, including: improvements to the waste water purification system, restoration or improvement to natural areas, measures to save energy, reduce pollution, and preserve the alpine landscape.

Another part goes to the Province of Bolzano-South Tyrol, which uses it first and foremost for interventions to improve water environments, such as reclamation of the Talvera/Talfer Stream and the rebuilding works to the embankments of the Isarco or Eisack River in Bolzano.

To this we can add the projects put in place by the concession holder for the purpose of improving the eco-compatibility of the hydroelectric power station, such as the creation of fish ladders and environmental monitoring to guarantee and optimise minimum vital water flows.

Since 2011, Alperia has been making funds available on an annual basis for the 15 large stations, including: Santa Valburga-Pracomune/St. Walburg-Kuppelwies, San Pancrazio/St. Pankraz, Lana, Sarentino/Sarnthein, Cardano/Kardaun, Ponte Gardena Bressanone/Waidbruck Brixen, Lappago/Lappach, Molini di Tures/Mühlen in Taufers, Tel/Töll and San Floriano/St. Florian.

The amounts made available every year, between 2011 and 2015:
